Woody Harrelson is producing a documentary on the Armadillo World Headquarters, Austin’s legendary music venue. The Midland native and longtime Austin resident joined the untitled film this week as a producer. He’s teaming with executive producers Jeremy Plager and Ilya Bronchtein, plus director David Brodie. The team is combing through more than 100 archival recordings shot inside the club decades ago. So the film promises rare footage, not just old stories. The documentary has no title yet, but a release timeline should follow soon.
The Armadillo opened in 1970 inside a converted National Guard armory. For a decade, it mixed rock, country, and everything between under one tin roof. Walking in felt like crashing a family reunion where nobody checked invitations. Willie Nelson played there, and so did Bruce Springsteen, Fats Domino, and Frank Zappa. The club closed in 1980, but its legend only grew. Original owner Eddie Wilson later revived the brand, and the Armadillo World Headquarters name still carries weight in Austin today.

Woody Harrelson explained the pull in a release. “It was where all kinds of worlds came together, artists, outlaws, hippies, students, dreamers, everyone under one roof.”
“Careers got started there, genres mixed, and what really sticks with me is how it made people feel like they belonged,” he continued. Then he added the line that matters most: “People came for the music, but what they found was each other.”
The film doesn’t have distribution yet, so there’s no premiere date. Still, the timing fits. More Texans are discovering the Armadillo’s story now than ever walked through its doors the first time. A room built from scrap plywood and army-surplus lumber somehow never stopped teaching Austin how to gather.
