Smoked Honey got its start in Fort Worth before relocating to Austin, and the band has built a reputation for high-energy live shows full of extended jams and funky rhythms that pay homage to the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, and the Grateful Dead. Down Hazy, meanwhile, formed among students at the University of Texas at Austin, blending Americana, bluegrass, and psychedelic rock into a sound the band has described as a soulful fusion of genres — the five-piece has already shared stages with acts like the Josh Abbott Band at festivals around the state.
Both bands represent a newer generation of Texas jam and roots acts building followings the old-fashioned way, through relentless live shows and word of mouth rather than radio play. Pairing a Fort Worth-rooted band with an Austin college act on the same bill makes for a fitting cross-section of where Texas’ jam scene is headed, with plenty of room for both bands to stretch out instrumentally over the course of the night.
The show lands less than two weeks after Ghostland Observatory’s Fort Worth stop at the same venue, part of a busy August at Tannahill’s. The Stockyards venue’s mule-barn setting gives jam bands like these room to breathe, with a sound system built for exactly this kind of loose, groove-driven show.
