Bingham was born in Hobbs, New Mexico, but Texas made him: his family bounced between Midland-Odessa and Houston, he attended high school in Stephenville, and he spent his teenage years on the rodeo circuit as a bull rider before guitar took over. That hard-traveling upbringing shaped the sound that eventually won him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for co-writing “The Weary Kind” from Crazy Heart, alongside T Bone Burnett.

Since that breakout moment, Bingham has kept building a catalog that ranges from stripped-down folk to full-throttle rock with his backing band the Dead Horses, and more recently he’s found a new audience playing Bunkhouse mainstay Walker Texas Ranger-turned-ranch-hand Colter on the hit series Yellowstone. None of that has softened the music, which still sounds like it was written in a truck cab somewhere on a West Texas highway.
