Austin: Hotel Vegas

Fifteen years in, Hotel Vegas is still the kind of dive bar that keeps its cover under five dollars — and its bookings weird.

Hotel Vegas opened in March 2011 inside the Salinas Building, a 1949 structure on East 6th Street that once housed the Salinas Hotel. Founders Charles Ferraro and Christian Moses Wills were joined as partners in 2012 by Jason McNeely, a former Spider House talent booker, and Brian Tweedy. The club shares its building — and a large backyard patio with its own stage beneath an oak tree — with sister room the Volstead Lounge, which leans toward a DJ and lounge vibe with New Orleans-inspired cocktails while Hotel Vegas and its patio handle the live-band programming.

A Scrappy Incubator

Local press has long described Hotel Vegas as a “cultural incubator” for Austin’s garage-rock, psych, punk, and indie scenes, deliberately embracing an unpolished dive-bar character — cement floors, dingy restrooms, beer-soaked stages — that keeps cover charges low and the booking local-first rather than mainstream. Reported capacity runs around 150 in the main room and up to 800 across the shared backyard patio. The venue has hosted a surprise 2014 Spoon show, Gang of Four in 2015, and Os Mutantes in 2023, and its house-favorite band, Osees (Thee Oh Sees), headlined Hotel Vegas’s 15th-anniversary celebration in March 2026 alongside Rocket From the Crypt, Surfbort, and the Mummies.

A Launching Pad

Beyond touring bills, Hotel Vegas has served as a launching pad for local acts including A Giant Dog, White Denim, and Die Spitz — bands that built their earliest followings on its stage before playing bigger rooms across town. Its longevity as an independently run, DIY-minded venue on a rapidly gentrifying stretch of East 6th Street has earned it mentions in the same breath as Austin institutions like Antone’s and the Continental Club, and it remains a short walk from other East Side rooms like Empire Control Room & Garage.
