Dallas Burrow, Wade Bowen and Dylan Gossett all drop new albums today. That kind of collision almost never happens in Texas country. Three working troubadours, three fresh records, one single Friday. Burrow’s album leans into gospel and blues. Bowen’s finally sees daylight after years in a drawer. Gossett’s turns the lens back toward home.
Dallas Burrow grew up in New Braunfels, Texas. His father once called Townes Van Zandt a blood brother. Mike Burrow met the songwriting legend back in the 1970s, and he never let go of that friendship. Now Dallas carries the connection forward. He even runs the Redbird Listening Room in his hometown, an intimate room built for songwriters. Dallas Burrow’s new record, Modern Day Vagabond, includes a cover of a Van Zandt song, played alongside flutist Donny Silverman. The Forty Below Records release also features Susan Gibson and Kelly Willis. Red Dirt producer Mike McClure helped shape all fourteen tracks. The band recorded it live at Yellow Dog Studios in Wimberley, Texas. They chased the same loose, unhurried feel that made Van Zandt’s own records so enduring.
Dallas Burrow Isn’t Alone on Release Day
Wade Bowen took a longer road to his own album. The Waco native shelved The Version of Me You Get for years. Randy Rogers’ longtime duet partner revisited it before finishing. He co-produced the record with Sean McConnell, and the wait paid off. Bowen said the songs felt “more relevant” once he finally finished them. The single “Turpentine” already found a home on the SCM Top 25 Playlist. Meanwhile, Dylan Gossett approaches his sophomore album from the opposite direction. The Austin singer built Westward around the shock of leaving home. Ramblin’, out now through Big Loud Texas and Mercury Records, does the reverse. “Ramblin’ is about coming back home and having real relationships when I was off the road,” Gossett said. He described the album as a way of “grounding myself in this music.”
Three different paths led to the same Friday, and that says something about where Texas country stands right now. A Texas troubadour’s job never really changes. Write the song true, then send it out the door. Today, three of them did exactly that, on the very same morning.
