October 20 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
$35
Peter Bjorn and John bring one of the 2000s’ most enduring indie pop hooks to Mohawk on Tuesday, October 20, with support from Josh Rouse. Doors are at 7:30 PM, with tickets starting around $35.
Formed in Stockholm in 1999, the trio of Peter Morén, Björn Yttling, and John Eriksson built a sizable international following off a single whistled melody: 2006’s “Young Folks,” a shuffling, conga-driven single from their album Writer’s Block that became an inescapable radio and festival staple, helped along by a guest vocal from The Concretes’ Victoria Bergsman. The band has released a steady stream of records since, moving through moodier, more experimental territory even as “Young Folks” remained their signature song — a blessing and a challenge that plenty of one-hit-defined bands never quite figure out how to live with gracefully, though Peter Bjorn and John have managed it by simply continuing to write strong, varied records.
Mohawk’s indoor stage, with its tight sightlines and reliable sound system, is well-suited to a band whose arrangements rely as much on texture and rhythm as straightforward guitar-pop hooks. The Red River venue has hosted plenty of 2000s-era indie acts making the same kind of victory-lap tours in recent years, drawing crowds who first heard this band on a laptop or an iPod fifteen years ago.
Björn Yttling has also built a notable career as a producer and collaborator outside the band, working with artists including Lykke Li and Franz Ferdinand, while Eriksson and Morén have each released solo material between group albums. Fans looking to extend the night can head to Emo’s, a short walk up Red River.
Doors are at 7:30 PM for this all-ages show. Red River parking fills up fast on weeknight shows with a draw like this one, so plan to arrive early.
