Singer Justin Furstenfeld formed Blue October in Houston in 1995 with his brother, drummer Jeremy Furstenfeld, and violinist Ryan Delahoussaye. The band’s mix of alternative rock, raw confessional lyrics and violin set it apart, and after years of steady touring across Texas, “Foiled” (2006) made them national stars. Its single “Hate Me,” written as an apology to Furstenfeld’s mother from the depths of addiction, became a top alternative radio hit, and “Into the Ocean” followed it onto pop and rock playlists.
Twenty years later, “Foiled” remains the band’s best-selling record and the emotional core of its live show. Hearing it start to finish means “Hate Me,” “Into the Ocean,” “She’s My Ride Home” and “X Amount of Words” in the order fans first heard them, in the city where the band got its start. The anniversary tour also visited Irving, Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and more Texas cities this fall.
