Dallas-bred drummer JD Beck and French pianist Domi Louna dropped their sophomore album, Who Asked?, on July 31. The 15-song record marks a sharp turn from their star-studded debut. Beck grew up in Dallas and became an internet sensation as a teenager. He was trading fours with drum legends before he could drive. Now 23, he still records from the same home studio in Dallas where the new album took shape.
First, the duo’s 2022 debut, NOT TiGHT, played like a party guest list. Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and Anderson .Paak all showed up. It earned two Grammy nominations and landed the pair on NPR’s Tiny Desk. They also popped up on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show. But Who Asked? skips the guest list entirely. Beck and Louna wrote, composed, arranged and produced every note themselves. They wove piccolo, oboe, trombone, violin, cello, flute and flugelhorn through the arrangements. After all, Dallas has a habit of producing this kind of prodigy. Also, look at the classical jazz chops Norah Jones honed at Booker T. Washington High School.
JD Beck Goes It Alone
DOMi and JD Beck recorded most of Who Asked? in isolation from each other. They played against demos and a click track, letting the pieces click into place later. So it’s like assembling a puzzle without ever seeing the box art. “We wanted every note to mean something, and nothing left to chance,” they said. The two met in Los Angeles as teenagers and bonded over impossible time signatures. Now, after four years since their debut, they’re staking their claim as serious artists, not novelties. Beck still calls Dallas home, and the new songs carry a strange, personal weight anyone can hear.
Beck used to sneak into North Texas jazz clubs before he was old enough to buy a ticket. Then, on Sept. 8, he’ll walk into Dallas as the headliner.
