Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert played back-to-back Texas shows, and Texas Monthly found two very different stars. Golden, Texas, native Kacey Musgraves and Lindale, Texas, native Miranda Lambert grew up about 20 minutes apart. Both climbed through the Texas circuit and Nashville Star, but their old rivalry has since cooled.
Musgraves hit Houston’s Toyota Center on October 5 with a rotating 360-degree stage, flames, and a giant LED butterfly. Meanwhile, the whole thing looked like a rodeo crashed an art museum. First, she covered Selena’s “I Could Fall in Love” for the Houston crowd. Then she closed with George Strait’s “All My Exes Live in Texas.” Before that, Musgraves told fans, “It is so damn good to be back in my home state.”
Two Stages, Two Very Different Texas Nights
Miranda Lambert answered one night later at Fort Worth’s Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky-tonk. The show doubled as a release party for her new album, Crisco. She skipped an opener, so she packed about 26 songs into two hours. However, she played only four Crisco tracks, and she grouped them back to back. Then a six-person string section and guest Parker McCollum rounded out the night. While Musgraves built a spectacle, Lambert built a dance hall. Two girls from the same East Texas pines found two ways to fill a room.
