Kacey Musgraves stopped mid-set Friday night when sparks rained down from the rafters during her Boston tribute to Dolly Parton. Kacey Musgraves was deep into her Middle of Nowhere tour, playing TD Garden in Boston. She had just wrapped “Golden Hour” when the pyro rig overhead misfired. Sparks turned into a small blaze above the stage. Musgraves froze mid-bow, staring up at the rafters. The Grammy winner didn’t panic, though — she just started narrating.
“That looks bad. Genuinely, something’s on fire,” she told the sold-out crowd. Then she cracked that she had “way too much hairspray” to stand under actual flames. She called the fire “cute” while admitting it was giving her anxiety. Then she asked if anyone in the arena had a “bedazzled fire extinguisher.”
Kacey Musgraves Doesn’t Rattle Easy
The blaze burned out within minutes. It flared fast, like a grass fire on a dry East Texas pasture, then it was gone. Kacey Musgraves picked the set back up once the smoke cleared. The Golden, Texas, native has built her whole Middle of Nowhere tour around home. So a few sparks were never going to rattle her.
Because before the fire, Musgraves had already turned the night into a tribute. She covered Dolly Parton’s “Here You Come Again.” Then she brought back “Rainbow,” a Golden Hour deep cut she rarely plays live. She told the crowd Parton, who died Aug. 25, inspired the song. A few stray sparks were never going to upstage a tribute like that.
