Tanya Tucker: Seminole’s Child Star

October 10

Today is the birthday of Tanya Tucker. She is 68 today.

Tanya Denise Tucker was born in Seminole, Texas on October 10, 1958. Seminole sits in Gaines County, in the flat far West Texas oil-and-farming country near the New Mexico border. Her father Beau Tucker moved the family constantly, chasing opportunity, and Tanya was performing in local talent shows across the Southwest by the time she was nine. Beau sent a demo tape to producer Billy Sherrill in Nashville. Sherrill listened. He signed a thirteen-year-old girl from Seminole.

Delta Dawn at Thirteen

“Delta Dawn” hit No. 6 on the country charts in 1972. Tanya Tucker was thirteen years old. The song was supposed to be a sad, heavy adult ballad. She sang it that way without trying, her voice already full of something that couldn’t be learned. “What’s Your Mama’s Name” hit No. 1 in 1973. “Would You Lay with Me (in a Field of Stone)” went to No. 1 in 1974. She has collected No. 1 singles across five decades. She won the CMA Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 2019 — when she was sixty years old. West Texas takes care of its own.
