Hubbard grew up in Oak Cliff, the South Dallas neighborhood his family moved to when he was eight, and he graduated from W.H. Adamson High School alongside future country star Michael Martin Murphey. After enrolling at the University of North Texas as an English major, Hubbard started playing folk music in coffeehouses before spending summers performing in Red River, New Mexico, where he wrote “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother.” Jerry Jeff Walker’s 1973 recording of the song turned it into an anthem of the progressive country movement and made Hubbard a cult figure in Austin’s outlaw scene almost overnight.

A founder of the Texas outlaw movement, Hubbard also formed The Cowboy Twinkies, a band many consider the first true cowpunk act, and he’s spent more than five decades building a catalog that’s made him one of the most respected songwriters to come out of the same Dallas scene that also produced the late, great Oak Cliff music history Hubbard himself helped shape. His gritty, riff-driven records over the past two decades have earned him a new generation of fans well beyond the outlaw-country faithful who first embraced him in the 1970s.
Hubbard’s live shows mix his early outlaw classics with the swampy, blues-inflected songwriting of his later career, delivered in the gravelly baritone that’s become his trademark. For Dallas audiences, a Granada Theater date is something closer to a homecoming than a typical tour stop, and longtime fans can expect Hubbard to lean into the stories behind the songs as much as the songs themselves.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show. The Granada Theater sits at 3524 Greenville Ave. in Lower Greenville, one of Dallas’s most walkable live-music strips, with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby for dinner before the show.
