Fort Worth soul man Leon Bridges announced his fifth studio album, Happiness Anytime, on July 14. So it’s rolling out in three waves through September. The Grammy winner built his name on vintage soul, but this record leans somewhere new. Bridges recorded it with J Lloyd and Lydia Kitto of the London neo-soul group Jungle. Together, they built a sound that pulls from Brazilian rhythms, Afrobeat and disco. So it feels less like a throwback and more like a block party.
Bridges grew up in Fort Worth, working as a busser and a dishwasher before Columbia Records signed him in 2014. After that, his 2015 debut turned him into one of the city’s proudest exports almost overnight. Then he chased sounds beyond his original blueprint. Now Happiness Anytime pushes that further than ever.
Leon Bridges Trades the Hymnal for a Horn Section
The first four songs — “Light the Way,” “Tears of Joy,” “Illusion” and “Your Love is Electric” — landed July 17. Then a second batch arrives August 21, and the final four songs close out the record on September 25. “I want this album to be something that lingers in people’s bones,” Bridges said. He’s also revamping his live show for the release, called Leon Bridges Presents Happiness Anytime. Expect a vinyl DJ, a full horn section and three backing vocalists, while Bridges dances out front again.
Fort Worth raised him on gospel and blues, but Bridges keeps proving he isn’t finished exploring. So this album sounds like a man chasing joy on purpose.
