Texas music icon Ray Wylie Hubbard has become the voice of a new campaign from Austin-based bootmaker Tecovas. Hubbard lends his signature gravelly narration to the company’s latest collaboration with INVERSA, a firm that transforms invasive Burmese pythons from the Florida Everglades into premium leather goods. The campaign debuted July 14 through KOKE FM in Austin, positioning the collection as a story about conservation as much as Western style.
The limited-edition collection features boots crafted from Burmese python leather sourced through INVERSA’s conservation program. Rather than treating the invasive reptiles as waste, the company repurposes their hides into luxury materials while supporting efforts to reduce python populations that have devastated native wildlife across South Florida. Burmese pythons have become one of the Everglades’ most destructive invasive species, prompting year-round removal efforts and the annual Florida Python Challenge.
INVERSA has promoted its partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) as a way to create economic value from invasive species while encouraging more removals. Early collaborations between the company and wildlife officials reportedly resulted in a significant increase in python removals, helping advance conservation efforts in the Everglades.
For Tecovas, the collaboration builds on a proven formula. The Austin-based bootmaker has released several limited-edition python collections over the past few years, with previous launches selling out in as little as three hours. This latest release places a greater emphasis on storytelling, pairing handcrafted Western boots with a conservation message that connects Texas heritage to environmental stewardship.
Hubbard’s involvement underscores that storytelling approach. Long regarded as one of the founding voices of Texas outlaw country and Americana, the veteran songwriter serves as narrator rather than spokesman or designer, bringing his unmistakable voice to the campaign. His weathered delivery reinforces Tecovas’ “True West” brand identity while adding authenticity to a message centered on turning an ecological problem into a practical solution.
